Presumably, breeders
are not very interested in breeding an average
Dane. Most breeders aim much higher, attempting
to find that perfect Stud Dog that will allow
their Bitch to produce an elite show dog.
One of the established tenets of modern genetics
is the concept of regression to the mean. Simply
put, the fact that each cast of the genetic dice
is governed by the laws of probability, this means
that the offspring is most likely to be closer
to the genetic mean than either parent. Thus,
even if you breed two Top winners, you are much
more likely to get a modest Dane than a GREAT
Dane.
But exactly how modest is the average? With that
question in mind, I went to the breeders of Cash's
pedigree. I chose to look at an entire decade
of Zarlin / Penadane breeding and I also queried
another accomplished Great Dane breeder. This
is what they had to say: BREEDER

So, while it is obvious that prospects for a Stud
Dog picked at random (or a pretty picture) from
the top twenty total population may not be very
promising, it is equally obvious that selecting
a Stud Dog that is sound, has
health and OFA clearances is an effective
way of increasing your chances.
